Where the mind is without fear

I took the liberty to alter a very great piece of poetry. It was written by Shri Rabindranath Tagore in a time when India was not free. Today, we are free, yet our women are not. They are still bonded into unreasonable expectations in the name of traditions and customs, family honour and husbands privilege, mother in laws pride and father in laws respect, children’s responsibilities and Gods will! There are some who are fighting back at the risk of being tarnished with *choicest swear words* and some who die a death everyday thinking they’ll not allow their daughters and daughters-in-law to go through this. And yet, the vicious cycle continues.

I hope this does not offend anyone. It is done in a very right spirit. Please take it likewise. Thanks:

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high

Where all our women are free

Where their hearts and souls are not broken apart into fragments

Within the domestic walls

Where they speak their mind and uphold the truth

Where each member of her family strives and encourages her towards her dreams

Where the crystal stream of reason has not lost its way

Into dreary desert sand of long dead habits and mindless customs

Where her freedom is celebrated and her rights are granted

Where she can speak act dance cook and do as she please

Where nonetheless she is precious adored loved and accepted

Where the minds are led forward solely by maturity and independence

Into ever widening thoughts and actions

Into that heaven of freedom, O fellow Indians, lets us awake our country!

Thanks for the read. Please feel free to give in your thoughts!

  1. Mamta Dagar says:

I used to recite the original poem EVERYDAY in my morning assembly. And I loved doing it. But I must say that this one is so powerful in meaning that co-ed schools should include it in their daily curriculum.
